To make the grade round here, you need more than just a willingness to get your hands dirty. You also need to have a good head on your shoulders, too.

At a minimum, you must have – or be expecting – at least three GCSE C grades in Maths, English and a science subject. Ideally though, we’d like you to have at least five GCSE passes under your belt before you start the scheme.

You also need to understand how machines work. As a mini-exercise, try answering the questions below. These provide a good flavour of the things you’ll need to know as an engineer and expect at the interview stage.

What are the basic components of electrical circuits – and what units do we use to measure them?

The basic components are voltage, current and resistance. We measure these in volts, amps and Ohm’s respectively. (Look up Ohm’s Law for more info on this.)

What are the four events that take place within an internal combustion engine?

Induction, compression, power and exhaust. This is known as the four-stroke cycle.

Why is a fuse fitted to an electrical appliance?

To disconnect it from the electrical supply in the event that it becomes faulty. This prevents damage to the appliance and the possibility of a fire.

Why do we oil or grease bearings?

To stop them from overheating. A thin film of lubricant separates the bearing surfaces and takes away the heat produced by the friction.

What device is used to increase air pressure in a pneumatic system?

A compressor.
